Default Removing Gas Tank

Need some help with removing the gas tank on my 2008 Train from you guys that have done it. What is the best way to remove it without making a mess? There is not much fuel in the tank. My low fuel light is on. Any tips & tricks would be really great!

Thanks!

I used forceps one the crossover tube, leaving like an inch in the middle then I cut the hose between the forceps and lifted it out. I put a towel down to catch the couple drips. You can also use vise grips, I think I got the forceps years ago at harbor freight for a couple bucks.

+1 - clamp off the crossover (I use needle nose vise grips) and cut the line. Have a rag handy - you'll likely drip a couple of drops but nothing serious. Once the tanks off, drain the remaining fuel. Pull the cut crossover and put a new line on one side with a vise grip on the other end. Reinstall, bending the crossover out of the way then attach it (don't forget to put the screw clamp on first), tighten down, and pull the vise grip.

What they said. Needle nose vise grips can be had pretty cheap, got some at lowes for about $5 each.

Why do you need to remove the tank to install new handlebars? Are you worried about getting the wiring connections under the tank? If you don't really want to remove the tank, you can just remove the console from the top and let it dangle, remove the front bolt, loosen/remove the rear bolt, and lift it upwards.. get something to shove under so it stays up and you can get at the harnesses..

else, with regards to making a mess..you'll be amazed at how much fuel is left in the tank (even after i drained mine with a syphon there was still like 1/4 gallon hiding that decided to take a **** on my floor).. I would suggest removing the front bolt, lifting the tank up so the fuel moves to the rear of the tank, remove your crossover fuel line and get yourself some setup (tubes in to a jug) and put those in the nubby things and then tilt the tank forward and let it drain through those..then have at the fuel line on the rear left side of the tank and all that stuff..

Wow man, those are gonna look sweet.

hey I've pulled my tank a few times, and you miiiiighht be able to get away with leaving the crossover line. Sometimes you can disconnect everything else and just kinda push the tank back a few inches, leaving it in place.

lol but probly not.

I'm sure I can get to the wire harness just by sliding the tank back but figured it would be a lot easier to just get the tank completely out of the way.
