My theory is the football cover may stop some the rain but it holds in the heat therefore ya feed hot air. Now the open filter/cover combination lets the cool air in and breaths alot better. When the rains come I pull over and cover it with a plastic bag I keep in the tool pouch and sit the rain out, I dont do the rain thing and have enuff sense to see when it's headed my way...

Boogaloo - you're talking about just the air cleaner cover, or a real intake? The previous addresses the cover and filter element, but what most are talking about when they upgrade is a real stage 1 intake upgrade... SE AC and Ness Big Sucker are two of the most popular. They not only provide the asthetic modification, but open up the intake tract for better airflow, hence better performance.

With the SE AC, you can take your choice of covers to make it appear as you wish, including sticking with the original (or modified) football if you really desire. You can also install a couple of different filter elements - my choice is the K&N.

Hope this helps!

Yes, thats one hardy filter and cleanin/reoiling isnt that big a deal. I believe the K&N # is hd-0800 but double check that.
And as tunaman brought up about stages, thats a stage one filter and yours needs to be remapped for it if it isnt already.

Really depends upon what you plan to do... if intake and exhaust are all you're going to install, there are plenty of options and not all are expen$ive. If you are going to do things in phases, it makes better sense to get a flexible tuning device that will grow with your changes.

All the info you need is out there (here), so do your research, think it through, and plan and mod accordingly.

I kept it simple: I bought the STAGE 1 from Fuelmoto with a Powervision.
Then added a cover from HD and also a rainsock.
