Default HELP.. Coil relocation question, CrossBones Softail

Re: 09 Cross Bones

Since I had to make some moves in order to Powder Coat the tranny top cover. I decided to relocate the coil to the horn location in order to give it a cleaner look.

As you can guess, the wire harness does not reach (as far as I can see). I was just going to use some "Butt Connects" and extend it the 8" or so..

My issue is I can only find 18 gauge wire and 3 of the 4 wires coming from it seem to be thinner. Maybe 20 gauge... (???) I looked at the 20 at Home Depot and that seemed way thinner... Am I missing something..?

Would or could it be a problem having a heavier gauge section of wire in the center...?

I know they sell a relocation kit for $80 or so, But Trying to do it myself if possible, though it does look nice and clean on the guys that got it, and I wouldn't have to deal with the Spark plug wires size issue. That'll be my last choice.

thanks for any help...

Wire size won't make a difference. I used Rocker spark plug wires when I did mine.

It Isn't the length of the Spark Plug wire I'm concerned about, That's merely a cosmetic thing. I'm referring to the wires that connect the Coil to the ECM. They are the ones that have to be extended in order to be able to move the Coil forward.

I know many have done this, what gauge wire was used..?

18g wire is fine but don't use butt connectors, solder and use shrink wrap.

Go to your local auto parts chain store for the wire, that's what I did. Try to solder the joints if possible it comes out way cleaner. I had never soldered before I moved my coil. I just got a cheap soldering iron and practiced on some scrap wire it's actually pretty easy to do. I also bought some wire cover from my harley dealer to make it look like it came from the factory.

You can see the black mesh wire cover running from the coil up under the tank then going under the seat.

Default thanks..

I was Planning on using the Butt Connectors that come with a tiny solder ring in the center of a shrink wrap tube... When heated up, the solder melts and wrap shrinks all at once... (youtube or look in ebay for "solder butt connectors")

I do have a cheap solder gun I could use. I always make a mess if it though. I guess I'm getting lazier in my old age... I'll see how these new solder/shrink butt connectors work....

I'll check the Auto parts store & see if they have the thinner wire, if not, I'll just use the 18 Gauge.

@ RossiSS, thanks for the pic... It does look clean with that mesh cover, I'll have to get me some of that... What spark plug wires did you use... they look to be the perfect size... are they from the kit?

Thanks...

Those solder connectors sound interesting. The plug wires came with the kit from DK Customs. They do sell them seperately, they are screamin eagle. Remember to post up pics when you are done.
