Default Springer Riser Question

Quick question. Just did my 16" apes and noticed after I completed the install that the risers move slightly back and fourth. Are there rubber dampeners on the stock risers that allow for movement or should I pull the bars and the risers off and check? Never really noticed it with the low bars. Thanks L&R

Yes.. The stock risers have rubber bushings, which after time will have a lot of play.

Good N Tite makes poly bushings, which will take the play of them.

Drag Specialties has the good n Tite ones

That is normal. The stock mini apes on my Crossbones give a bit more leverage and you can feel the risers move. Never really bothered me...

I just swapped out the stock mini-apes for Flanders Bad Boy style handlebars. While I was doing so, I replaced my riser bushings with the recommended Gooden Tight bushings as I had movement in my risers as well. (They may not bother everybody, but I didn't feel safe with any sort of play in there, & wanted everything tight).

At first inspection, these are a lot better than what HD put in there originally. The bushings are a lot beefier. And so far (after a few miles), they feel solid, & there is no play in the risers.

I would recommend anyone thinking about changing out the stock springer riser bushings (the stock ones are crap).

Thanks,
brian

Funny. I never notice the movement under normal operation. I only notice it when I am muscling the bike around in the garage by the bars. Just curious as to how much of the movement the rest of you feel to worry about how unsafe it is?

I had about 1/8" movement (maybe a little more). I mostly noticed it when I would move the bike around in the garage too, but I could tell when I was riding.

I first noticed it when I brought home (from just buying it). I was riding on the highway, & let go of the left handle. The moment I did that, the handlebars would start to shake. I knew something wasn't right, so I got on here & did some research. I first tried tightening down the bolts inside the risers, but realized they would need to be replaced.

For $60, it was a safety issue for me. Peace of mind also goes a long way! :-)

I have 16 inch wild ones on my springer and they have a bit of play in them, but I like it and there are no vibrations to be felt. I wouldn't worry about it at all, mate.
