Just purchased the Samson True Duals with removable baffles. Is it necessary that I get a tune immediately? Big expense for all at the same time so was hoping to get the exhaust on while saving for tuner, air cleaner, etc. Any harm in waiting on the tune?
With just exhaust you should be just fine but when you add any kind of air cleaner that increases air flow you will MOST DEFINATLY have to get some kind of fuel management.
With just an exhaust change no you do not need a tune. Even if you change the air cleaner you still do not need a tune or the HD download. The stock ECM will work just fine, it will adjust. It may not be the most optimum setup but it will run fine and when you have the funds get a fuel management system and a dyno. I ran my 09 Heritage with rush slipons and K&N filter for several years with stock ECM, no problems. Others may tell you different but this is straight from an HD Tech with over 30 years and from several independents also. So, do it and ride it and when you get the money, fine tune it.
Loaded question. If your bike is EFI AND has O2 sensors, no tuner should be needed if you just do pipes. If it does not have O2's then I would get a tuner or you risk running lean and heating up the pipes (blueing) but as stated, it's your bike.
Thanks all for the responses. I put the exhaust on today. Runs fine and I think it will be even better after it adjusts and breaks in. Likely going to go ahead and get the tune in a few weeks. Had always planned on it, but glad I don't have to do it right away.
