Default Help with primary cover and starter compatability question

I have a 1990 Softail Custom. Some PO before me updated the inner primary cover to the 1997+ style. I had it off working on it one day and a friend told me I could bolt up one of the 1997+ 5 hole derby cover type of outer primary covers, because the inner was changed. He conveniently had one for sale with a very nice Derby cover, inspection cover, and had the matching ignition cover. He only wanted $75 for all of it including the outer primary cover, so I bought it. I went to put it on last night, and the starter drive is too big for the hole in the outer primary cover, it is suppose to fit into. This is my question, can I buy a 1997 starter drive and put it on the end of my 1990 starter to solve this issue. If not, since I will be needing a new starter soon anyway, can I buy a 1997+ starter and bolt it up to solve this problem, or will there be issues with the starter drive and the ring gear not matching up properly? Will there be other issues. By the way, my moter is built, so I wanted to buy a high torque starter that can handle the high compression. Will that cause any issues?

Thanks,
Robert

Are you sure the bushing didn't stay on the jack shaft of the starter when you pulled the outer cover off?
I will do some research and get back on here tomorrow
Try and have you an answer

Just noticed your reply. Thanks. I compared the sizes of the holes. The newer outer primary cover has a smaller for sure. Thanks for the help. Starter completely quit working today. I had to push start it to get home. Now I need to figure out which starter I want, before I can get it running.

I really thought you guys would help me. I thought you guys knew your stuff. This forum is worthless if we don't help each other. What is the point of using this forum if no one cares enough to help? I know some one could help me if they wanted too. That is what makes this so frustrating.
