Default CV carb performance

So I'm starting to do some research and getting a list started for when I can start buying stuff (albeit with approval from the wife, sometimes).

Since I'm gonna have the bike ripped apart I wanted to get some headwork done (thinking NRHS) with a Hi-Po cam. Looking at a Stage 2 CNC and not sure what cam yet but something set up for the street. I was looking at getting a carb but one of my buddies here says the CV carb will work if it's tuned right. Anyone have experience with this? Will it be sufficient or will I need to get a carb?

Look up Joe Minton, he has written several articles on Harley CV and Mikuni replacement carbs. Lots of tuning advice and reasoning behind it. Also addresses tuning for power vs real world, ie the need for reasonable fuel economy.

Thanks NRHS. Don't know how I missed your response. I've actually been looking at your site and was thinking about going with y'all to do the head work for my EVO and I'm glad you replied.

I'm building a clean "rat" hot rod. I'm about to build an engine stand right now and send the frame out for prep and powder coat.

I don't have a particular goal in mind for the power I want, but I want it torquey, throaty, and just plain mean. Wanted to do stage 2 head work and was going to discuss with you choice on cams and carb. It's not my daily, so I want it to be thumpy with heavy cam. As my build process advances I'll be definitely contacting y'all.

Oh and also, it has 30K on it. Should I rebuild the bottom end? I was planing on pulling the jugs to replace the base gaskets of the jugs. Suggestions? Thanks!

You might want to look into having your CV "Performance Tuned" by Dale at Killer MC Products. A lot of positive feedback on his carb work has been posted in the "Evo Classic Models" sub-forum as well. He charges $200 to mod & rebuild yours, or $300.00 to purchase a modded CV outright. Custom modded for your bikes specs. Mine should arrive later this week but I probably won't have time to install it until next week. You can read more about it on his eBay auction: http://www.ebay.com/itm/270620924203...84.m1423.l2649

Man that sounds tempting! The wife is not gonna like you guys. haha.

This is going to sound novice (because quite frankly I am), but I can remove the piston without removing the rod from the crank right? I'll do more research on that but since it's going to be apart I might as well do it.... can't wait!

Will this change displacement much, if at all? What kinda power am I looking at here?

What are the differences in the dome and flat top pistons. (please excuse my ignorance) Thanks!

Which bike are you working on the Evo or the twin cam?

I'm working on the Evo. I have it all torn down, just waiting to build an engine stand this weekend to remove the motor. Once I get the frame prepped and sent out to powder coating I'm going to get started on the motor.

Ok, thanks. I guess the best thing for me to do is call and discuss options. I'm thinking high compression, not sure the disadvantages though. If any. I'm not set on any particular cam, so I can choose based on what pistons I decide to go with.
