I just bought a new 2007 FXSTC. I'd like to change out the stock mufflersto something withthat deep rumbling Harley sound. I traded a 2000 FXSTD with Vance-Hines Short shots and Thunder Monster baffles; that soundwas OK but too loud and a bit to tinny Beforethe Vance-HinesI had Screaming Eagle slip ons the stock pipes. Neither of these combinations gave me the sound I'm looking for.
Today, I saw a 2007 96 cu insoftail with Sreaming Eagle slip on's.The sound wasclose to what I'm looking for but not quite it.A guy at the dealertold me to wait for Python's to come out for the 2007 96 cu in big twins and they should do the trick. Changing out pipes to get the right sound can get expensive so I'd like to get it right the first time. Anyone have any suggestions for getting that deep, rumbling harley sound that's not excessively loud?
On your 2000 bike with the Thunder baffles, did you also install their lollipops? I was running without baffles and just added lollipops, thinking they might quiet the sound level just a hair. The lollipops changed the tone of the exhaust to a deeper less raspy sound. This gave the impression to me that the sound level also went down. It was probably just the tone difference.
I ended up taking them out and putting in Khrome Werks HP drag baffles.

If you mean the flat washers, yes they were on the Thunder Monster baffles and they did changethe sound to a deeper tone than the stock VH baffles but still not the tone I was looking for. The TM baffles didn't really make much difference in the loudness just made the sound a bit deeper. I don't know if this was real or imagined but I think installing the new baffles improved the bike's mid range performance.
I've got an 06 Standard that I put V&H Straightshots on. I think they are perfect, not too loud when just cruising but will give you that classic bad-*** harley sound when you roll iton!
Since you would be going to true duals, make sure you do a good fuel management module and air cleaner so it will run right. Just my 02.
I have the SE pro 16Ga Double Barrel exhaust on my Deuce, I installed V&H quiet baffles and the sound is as loud as the V&H big shot staggards but not as raspy andbrittle, it has a much deeper tone to it.
Ihave an indy harley mechanic that did some work for me on it and he said that it's one of the best sounding exhausts he's heard, he loved how it sounded![8D]
I really need to take a vid with sound sometime of these rineharts on my bike.. I like 'em and say they have a nice deep tone, but you may not. I can say I've had a couple different exhausts that I really loved for a good deep rumble.. These rinehart staggereds and on my old bike VH longshots.. The longer pipes really sounded great on that old Evo.
This might be an incorrect statement (so those more knowledgeable feel free to correct my ignorant butt) but just from an acoustics standpoint on exhaust sound... Longer pipes will have a lower resonant frequency resulting in a lower "deeper" tone.. Shorter pipes will have a "crackier" tone.. Baffles will only knock off the top-end making a "cracky" sound more of a "chuffy" sound.. I had Big Shot Shorts with the stock baffle.. Could Not Stand Them.. for sound or for performance. Huge mid-range torque dip which is typical with short drags.
Thanks all that answered. I think Babs kind of spelled it out for me. I've always liked the look of shorter pipes but they all seemed to have that "cracky" sound. Maybe I should be looking at longer pipes for the deeper tones. Thanks again to all for the input
