Donny Peterson had a dissertation in a recent AIM. F was footshift, X was Big Twin, S is Softail, T is Standard. Don't have that copy at hand, but that's what I remember. F and X are old designations, S and T newer. But kinda knowing H-D, I could be so wrong, I'll get struck by lightning. Or you guys.

If you look up Donney's Unauthorized Guides to Harley Davidson. I think that's the name of the book series. He pretty much says that the letter designators are just about useless when it comes to figuring out what model a bike is. You have to have the year to go with it and a chart. Evidently Harley names the bike whatever they want and reuses letters or doesn't use them. Chaos really.

The FXST and FXSTC have wide glide front ends. Before it got the dyna mounting system, the Wide Glide was the FXWG.

Don't know about the rest but FL is a fat front end
FX is the "skinny" front end
Hence fat boys, heritage etc are FL models
Softtail standards, softtail customs, dynas have skinny front end
At least that's what my research came up with when I was shopping for mine
I have an FXSTC skinny front end and tire
My bro in law has an FX dyna w skinny front end and tire my other bro in law has an FL fat boy fat front end and tire
And that's also what my local dealer confirmed for me when I looked into getting floor boards instead of pegs for my FX fronted bike, I was told I would need to convert to an FL front end to be able to put floorboards on my FX model.

Always thought after the FX was self explanatory. ST=Softail, STC=Softal Custom, STD=Softail Duece, STB=Softail Black(night train) FXD=Dyna. Or am I an idiot.
