Default Help me with detachable sissy bar.

As the wife will be an almost constant passenger on my new to me 2005 Fat Boy, I need a sissy bar. I want a quick release sissy bar. I have two questions. First, of the sissy bars I see on ebay, are there any that are great vs brands that just suck? And second, there doesn't seem to be a lot of room between the mounting hole and the rear turn signals. Do the turn signals need to be relocated to install a detachable sissy bar??? Please advise.

Plenty of H-D sissy bars on Ebay, so worrying about quality shouldn't be an issue. If you have the "wing" style of TS mounts, you'll have to convert them to the round stalk and move them to the last hole on the strut. And don't forget the docking hardware. I think I've seen all this stuff on Ebay recently.
Are you gonna make your wife ride on THAT seat?

Depends on what you want to spend. I installed the docking hardware and got the detachable sideplates for my 2011 Heritage. The docking hardware runs about 35.00 and the plates 139.00. Sissy bar depends on size to what cost. I got mine through HD.

Jefkat, I would like the budget to be $200 max. Seems doable on ebay. Tallest sissy bar I can get without being stupid tall. 15 inch range. Which is why of course I want detachable. So when shes no on it, the silly thing can come right off.

Machinistmate, yes, I have the wing style. They are mounted in the last hole already. I will look at the stalk style, but to be honest, if I have to pull them I will relocate them WAY out of the way. Not back on the strut. It looks like a royal pain to get to them. Like remove the feakin' fender pain. So if I touch them, they are pretty much gone for good. I was hoping I may not need too if there is a sissy bar setup that works with them where they are. As far as the seat goes. The wife is well aware, if she wants a better seat, she knows what seats are. She can lookup and buy whatever seat she wants. I have no problem with that. lol.

They are a pain as the strut has to come off. Not enough room to get a wrench in there. At least on my bike. One option is to grind a bit of the rear of the side plate to clear the stalk. I bought a pair of those stalks with the lights in them not knowing what I now know. Considering trying what I suggested to see if its possible. Then touch up chrome with nail polish.

Most of the detachable sissy bars I have seen require you relocate the turn signals. I run the HD bar but made a little mod so I could run the stock turn signals. I just ground off a 1/4 or so and touched it up with black nail polish.

Like you, I wanted a detachable sissy bar so I could remove it when my wife didn't ride, but it's become a permanent fixture.

Thanks for the insight. Yeah, it will be on the bike quite a bit but I really want to be able to snap it off for those times when that cleaner look hits me.

Question, just to be clear because I may not quite understand Softails yet:
Is the turn signal "just" bolted to the strut cover or does it go thought the strut as well. Because thats a huge difference in work, i.e. just pulling a strut cover vs removing the whole fender.

Same here.. One thing I'll add is the every part/mod I've bought from dealer has fit perfect and the quality would be hard to beat.
All my chrome add ons are going on 6yrs old and they all still looks like new and they all work like they did when new.
Some aftermarket parts are cheaper but not all IMO are as good and won't last as long or fit correctly to began with as the HD parts.
