Hello to all,
I have a 1997 Fatboy and at about 42 MPH the hanlebars have an erratic shake to them. Any ideas on what is going on?Tires and wheels have been balanced and still same thing. I am wondering if steer bearings may cause this problem, because I have noticed a light trace of grease coming from below post. It has not been over greased.
Thanks for your time and someone please give me a little advise where to start.
I adjusted a two metric scoots (cruiser and a standard)that did the exact same thing. I pulled the upper triple and retorqued the steering stem bearings and they're smooth as silk now.
Look at you front tire. Does it have any abnormal wear patters (cupped on outside edges)? if not, make sure your tire pressure is correct. Ifcontinues to shake, have someone else do aspeedbalance on your front wheel assy.If the balance is slightly off, it can cause this. I have never seen a head shake that wasn't caused by the front wheel / tire Assy.
Had the same problem with my 97 Heritage. Had the fall-away (head bearings) adjusted to spec and no more head shake.
Tough job to do yourself and a pretty critical adjustment. Too loose and you get low and high speed head-shake to tight and you get handling problems. I would suggest you start with a good dose of grease to the neck, check for loose spokes, missing wheel weights and tire pressure. Nothing to fool around with.
