I've seen a few custom Softails with 16" front wheels, no fender and really like the look. What would it take to mount (properly) a 16" wheel on a Softail? I'm sure someone here has done it ...
Which HD models came with a stock 16" front wheel? Would the change from 21" to 16" change the geometry of the bike? The Fatboy has a solid 16", are the forks 41mm or larger?
I run a 2001 FXSTB and have a fatboy front wheel......looks great, ride is excellent.......I bought the bike used and it came this way and it very well may have a complete fatboy front end....
Sorry but I just spent a half hour trying to add pics to this only to have them tell me the file is too large.....
the Black Maria 2001 Night Train...screamin eagle exhaust, 8" rise wide glide bars, fatboy front end
There are a few of us that have modified our FXST's. Mine is in process. No need to change the forks, but you'll have to lower the rear end a bit to accomidate the 16" front wheel. I bought a fender and it's at the paint shop now. Soon as it comes back, I'll have my mechanic do his magic and I'll post pix when it's done (probably 3 weeks from now).
I have an '06 FXSTI with a 16 x 3.5 Weld Racing wheel. See Sig pic. The front axle spacers had to be changed and you have to put spacers on the front caliper mounting bolts to make the caliper line up with the rotor.I think it rides better than it did before. The larger sidewall on the new tire gives a little more cushion up front. I had already lowered the rear end with the Burnout cycles lowering kit.
agapsdiver, would the new wheel spacers & brake spacers be necessary when using a stock HD 16 inch wheel? I'll be doing the same thing with my 01 NT but using a Heritage Classic front wheel.
Yes, I did need the new axlespacers and disk brake spacers and I diduse a stock HD 16 inch wheel, (H-D Black ThunderStar Wheel, Part number 43771-00A) made for the Heritage/fatboy. You may be able to get away with the stock parts if you DO NOT INSTALL A FENDER... but I installed a fender, and the fork front fender brackets have an offset if you look and measure closely.....
$130 (shipped) for the wheel - 04 Heritage, bearings and rotor.
$90 (shipped) for the Dunlop MT9016 tire
$32 for tube, mount & balance
The OD of the hub (outside of bearing) is 6.5 inches and "appears" to be the same as the stock 21" wheel. It may be off +/- 1/4 as the hub was measured with the wheel still on the bike. You could call it an estimate.
From my standpoint right now, the wheel should fit properly with the stock spacers. I'll know more this weekend when I put the wheel on. CANT WAIT!
