I have an 02 FLSTFi and since I first bought it (my 1st bike) I have heard a "ticking" type of noise coming from the primary. I adjusted the tensioner and torqued it according to the service manual. I recently had it in a shop at the beginning of April for some wheels and custom work to be done and had them check the primary. They adjusted it to where it "should be"
I rode it from So Cal to Laughlin, upon pulling in the clutch after I was riding out there I heard a humming / growling noise coming from the primary. It immediately went away.
Now, 2 Months later, I have heard that noise a handful of times.
Anyone have any ideas what it could be? The "tick" I have been concerned with is still there as well. Who knows though, the "tick" may be "normal" on a Harley. But the Growling / Humming when engaging the clutch for sure can't be!
I had a growling that would come and go and found that the dealer had my belt banjo string tight after replacing the tire. Once I adjusted the belt to what it should be the growling whent away.
I had some noise from the belt before too. Double check that before tearing anything apart. As for the ticking, hard to say for sure, but probably a normal noise.
Probably belt tension. If it happens when you lean or just start out, especially. The belt shouldn't be rubbing against either side of the rear pulley, either.
Just make sure it's not the compensator coming loose.
