I'm not sure the year they changed the fuel injection system fromt he older MM to dephi. But the older EFI system is tempermental. If it is a carbed bike, then no worries.
By the way, never buy anything when you are in heat for it.

Its not a huge deal, they can be replaced like someone said for about $100 but the fact that he doesn't even know that is a bit weird.
Did he say whether it had been tuned or had a tuner on it? Does it have a stock AC on it?
