Default 2006 Standard

Just purchased a new 2006 Standard. I dont want my wife complaining about the comfort when riding 2-up. Should I leave the stock seat on and get a good back rest or change the seat too. Most of our trips will be under150 miles.

The stock seat is OK for short distance stuff but will quickly compress to the point where you'll both be able to feel the frame rails underneath your butts!!

I'd definitely try it out though to see how you get on before splashing the cash. Otherwise have a look at the Mustang web site. They make some pukka 2 up seats with multiple variations on back rests etc.

Good luck with the new ride

I have a sleek aftermarket seat on my '05 Standard for local riding (it looks good and is low) but for long rides I usually put the standard seat back on. The pillon part is not as good as the riders but the trick is to have plenty of stops along the way. A back rest will be an advantage as it will give her added security but will not help a sore butt.

I had a hard time with my stock seat. I couldn't ride more than an hour before my back started to ache. I bought a Mustang seat and have zero issues with back pain now. The back rest provides a lot of comfort.

Congrats on the new bike, you are gonna love it,and welcome to the standardbrotherhood. I agree with the earlier posters, the stock seat is not very comfortable. I only ride solo and I like the look of solo seats so I bought a HD Brawler and have been surprised at how comfortable it is, so I am happy now.
If I was going to be hauling a lady I would probably spring for the seat that comes stock on the Softail Custom. Although it may be kind of ugly, I have been hearing a lot of good things about it as far as being comfortable and it comes with a sissy bar which makes a passenger feel more secure.

The stock 2-up seat sucks on the standard - not good for you or a passenger (in my previous experience anyway). The passenger area is probably the worst. Are you going to ride solo most of the time? If so,will you be leaving the 2-up seat on all of the time, or switching out from a solo to a 2-up, off and on? She's definately going to want a backrest on there when she rides, and that will make her a lot more comfortable. If you get a solo, you could find one that accepts a bolt-on pillion pad for the passenger. But, again these are not very comfortable for the passenger. I'd recommend (as also noted by 06 FXST) getting the stock seat and back rest off of a 2007 Softail custom. These are on ebay all the time now, and are way comfortable. They're going for around $225-$250 - seat and back rest. It'll bolt on to your bike and fit. Cheaper than a Mustang, and probably the same cost as a quality detacheable back rest (and side plates, pad, docking hardware, TS relocation, etc, etc). Less than 150 miles doesn't seem like much, but you're trips will grow as you go. And, from my past experience- if she ain't happy, you're not happy. Get her comfortable.........

First of all congrats on your new scoot! And welcome to the Standard family. I too have the 06 Standard and the first thing I did was change the seat. I personally like the look of the 07 Softail Custom seat and the comfort level is, well just remarkable. There is an article in the January issue of "THUNDER PRESS" about the 07 Softail Custom. The article talks about the seat on the Custom and says: "The Customs seat is plush to the point of pampering." I will agree with that. It also says: "My longest day on the bike's been 532 miles, and my bum and back survived the ordeal without a complaint." The Road Test was done and written by Terry Roorda.
I would sugest you go and sit on some seats. Find a bike night, ask around of other riders on the seats on their bikes, ASK if you may sit on the bike.
But again, I love my seat, take a look...
And..

Ride Safe..

I have an '06 FXST. The stock seat does suck for the rider and passenger; even with a backrest. I ultimately bought my wife her own bike and turned mine into a solo bike. But prior to that I put a Corbin Dual Tour seat on it. It was very comfortable for both of us.

One of the things my wife really hated about the stock seat was how slippery it was, and how it sloped toward the front of the bike. So every time I hit the brakes, no matter how lightly, she would slide forward. The Corbin also has a little "hump" toward the front of the passenger seating area, so it solved the sliding problem too.

But here's the down side. The stock backrest pad did not work because the back of the seat is too high; so I bought some matching leather from Corbin and had one made (I don't like the look of the Corbin backrests).

Hope that helps.

Well done on the new bike, don't forget to post some pics, soon.

I've been considering changing the stock seat on my custom as it isn't the "cleanest" looking in my opinion - but it is so very, verycomfortable I can't bring myself to change it.

I bought my 06 Standard about a month ago. I have only got about 400 miles on it so far and I already want another seat. Had a Mustang on my last bike and that is definately what I am getting next. I agree with some of the other posters with that after about an hour of riding on the stock seat, I really start to feel it....Have fun on your Standard!!!!
