But again, I could care less. The list will be a long one if I ever get pulled.......and knock on wood I've never been hassled.
I agree jreichart....the list could/would be long if they really wanted to hassle you (or me). Now that I think about it, I've benn pulled over for excessive speed, etc. and they didn't site me for the plate, or no turn signals, or skid lid, or louvered brake light, etc.
However, with the shitty economy, they are sighting riders a lot more and I gotta' say, the bike cops are the worst ('cause they know all the regs.). That's the case around here...it was even on our local news that they are targeting bikes because there are more riders, due to gas prices. They are looking for an excuse to pull over to check endorsements. Tax collectors!
Florida passed a law about plates being horizontal but luckily everyone bitched and they appealled the law and you can run them vertical again. They say the law was targeting the crotch rocket crowd who run the plates way up inside and under the rear fender. Good for us there are a ton o motorcycle cops in Florida and they do support the bike crowd as long as you arent a jackass. At least that has been my experience.
I am going to do the same thing. I was going to use a dremel to whack off the plate up near the light is where its creased and then use a different dremel tool to finish it. Never done this kinda thing before so it should be fun.
That mount might work fine, the description says its a horizontal plate mount, so you just might have room for it above the pipes.
I don't see where it says its a horizontal mount. I thought it was a vertical mount, which is what I wanted. Lol I still think it will mount vertically on the upper swing arm above the pipes (hopefully).
Hey SLIMJEFF, you said that is a stock Harley Swing Arm Bag. Do you know the part number? It looks like that would work on my application. Thanks, Dude!

Mounted the plate tonight and it fits perfect and it is horizontal like you said. The only downside is it has a spot for a tailight on it that hangs down (or up), which I don't need. I can't cut it off because it will probably discolor the chrome. Bummer. It looks good though if it were not for that. I put the part for the tailight on the bottom so it hangs down towards the pipes and blends in more.
I am not sure I like it yet... hate to waste that $40 on it though. lol I think if I maybe do away with the "Harley Davidson" plate bracket it might help some.
Here are a couple of pics:

Decided to go with a plain chrome frame and used a Tranny Side Cover Emblem to cover up the holes on the bottom that is made for a tailight. It actually looks really good, I was surprised. lol It's hard to see the emblem below but you can compare it to the pics above to see what I did.
Over the winter I am going to change to a LED Tri Bar Tailight.
Next project (tonight or tomorrow) is to chop the old license plate holder off the back. woohoooo!!! And here is what that will look like:
