Default Noise in Primary

I took my 86 fxst on a 200 mile run last week, and about half way I noticed that when Im stopped, then put it in 1st, I hear a noise comming from the primary. Almost like a grinding noise. Doesnt do it in any other gear, or neutral. Any suggestions?

Two things come to mind, a primary chain adjustment or a compensator nut that is coming loose. There's some info in the do it yourself forums that will explain the proceedure for the compensator nut. The chain proceedure should be in the service/owners manual.

A comp nut loose most times will sound like a rod knock. But a grinding noise can be the chain hitting the inner primary if it was extremly loose. Simple answer to your question. Pull the outer cover and take a peek
