Default DITY 1K Mile Service Experience

Just completed my 1K mile service by myself today, and decided to share the experience for those who are thinking about it. Materials cost about $80 directly from the stealership.

Materials needed
- Oil Filter
- 20W-50 Full Syn Oil
- 64oz Transmission/Primary Fluid
- Primary Inspection Cover O-Ring Kit (Derby Cover gasket kit)
- 1 Tube of Harley Lube for throttle cable lubrication
- Recommend bottle of brake fluid, just in case you need to top-off
- Long skinny funnel
- Container/means to dispose of old transmission/engine oil
- Bike/ATV Lift
- Standard TORX, allens, chalk, and screw drivers. Per the manual requires 10-21 ft/lb torque wrench as well.
- Lotta papertowels and windex to shine up your fingerprinted chrome!

Total Time: 5 hrs
Experience: Weekend tinkerer
Difficulty Level: Low

Everything per the service manual is very straight-forward. I took my time and didn't have any real major issues. The most confusing was probably the fall-away steering bearing check (what I used the chalk for). Mine was GTG so I didn't have to delve into adjustments.

Not much of a write-up, but wanted to share the info in case any of your newer guys are considering doing it yourself vice the $400-$600 I've heard quoted around the internet for the 1K @ the stealership.

Cheers!

Nice. I'm doing mine and I split it up into two parts. I changed all the fluids last weekend. This weekend I'll do the rest.

I just bought my bike a month ago and I am about to turn 5k miles so I think I should do the 5k service (since I have no idea if the dealer, who is not an HD store but is an HD dealer, I bought it from did anything to it). I am waiting on my manual, should be here within a week. I'm hoping I can tackle it myself. :-)

You pumped the neck full of grease right? Sometimes they come dry from the factory, part of most dealer 1k services is to fill em up.

I didn't see anything about it....can you elaborate? Anything in the service manual I can look up about it?

There should be one of those zerk fitting on the side of the neck. You'll need a grease gun, and a tube of good all purpose grease from the auto zone or dealer (red-n-tacky is good stuff). Pump some grease into the neck till you see it ooze out around the dust cap on bottom AND top. tie a rag tight around the bottom if you're not getting any out the top. Should be in the manual with the regular service stuff, this should be done at each fluid change, but the first time is most important as many have said the necks come almost from the factory.
