Hello all. I ride a softail deuce 2003 model.would like to change the stock Harley filter do with KN air filter. Is this advisable? If so what is the part number for the KN filter.would i have to do any mods by just changing the filter alone
I believe K&N makes a direct replacement filter. Check their website. I would advise going with a Ness Big Sucker or other similar filter replacement system to get more airflow if you're gonna make the change. K&N #HD-1499 for a 2003 FXSTD stock replacement.
Be careful when you recharge it. DO NOT douse the hell out of it with the oil. Just a light mist to coat and that's it. If you see any drips, that's too much. If you see drips, you over saturated it and it also means that oil will get sucked into the bike. Also make sure it's dry before re installing back on bike. I like to have an extra element for all my vehicles (they all have them) to avoid putting it back on while wet.
I'm thinking about installing the heavy breather myself, just can't justify the cost right now. I would get a cheap one off fleabay, but I don't like the looks of the spike cleaner and I prefer to get quality, so, I'll wait.
It's a very good upgrade. Lot's more air for the bike. It's also about a 20 minute job to install it. I don't know if you need the whole recharging kit...but you do need the oil for it. I agree that you need to make sure you don't over oil it. But if you do over oil it, just make sure you let it dry for a longer period and that it's not still wet when you put it on. Also, always put a clean rag in the hole while it's off the bike to make sure nothing gets into the bike. You'll love the Heavy Breather. But the regular upgrade will be fine as well. I have that on my Deluxe.
Hey. Thanx guys. I would love to get a new airbox cover, however i love the look of the 100 year edition one that is currently standard on my bike. . That's why i only want the actual filter. Also can't justify the cost of an actual new airbox. I seem to like the cone shaped one, however they are rather expensive here in deep Africa.
Hey thanx for all the info. This forum is invaluable when it comes to getting advice. Got hold of a dealer today. . Found one in south Africa. . They have one in stock. Will go and see them tmrow. R 870,00. Each. . . That's about $100,00. . But Im sure well worth it. Thanx again. And by the way. .when it says garage empty next to my log in name. . . What does that intact mean?
