Anyways, to answer your question (which it looks like it already has), yes the filter is oiled and it should not feel oily; it can, but with how we oil them at the factory, it should not have excess oil on the outside of the screen.

The filter media is white and the oil is what makes it red. So as long as the media is redish-pink in color; you are good to go. As a side note, that filter does not come un-oiled.
Delayed or not, I appreciate the follow up. Enjoy the "scenery" at Sturgis and ride/drive safe.

Okay, I know this is for the K&N filter and that is what I previously had on my other bikes. Recently I got a different bike and when I got the SE air filter kit, the air filter that came with it specifically stated to NOT oil, it is stamped right into the metal backing plate of the filter itself....but the instructions state to oil it...HD screwed the pooch on this. The filter media looks white.

Sounds like You may have the white SE stage 1 filter that comes in the SE kit its a real fine synthetic fiber & non oiled. You do not need to oil it as it will damage it. It is cleanable & there are instructions with it to do so when needed. The K&N Filter is a mutiple layered cotton goz & it is red in color & pre oiled from K&N factory this filter takes the red oil application after cleaning.

The K&N oiled filter is the one I personally preffer of the two filters mentioned. They both work fine for stage 1 applications just diffrent styles of filtering media.

Back in 09 I learned that the HD SE filter made by K&N is not the same as the Life time rechargeable K&N filter.

My almost new SE - K&N filter had it rubber seal on the back go bad and my dealer said there was a recall on the SE filter,, but if I wanted to I could pay the $18.00 more and get a real life time K&N..

It was confusing at first since HD say's U can wash the SE filter but it can come apart if U do, So the dealer recommended me to buy new one every 5k,, it didn't take me long to decide to pay the extra $$$ for the Real K&N.

here's the one I bought.
