I assume you are using a Harley motorcycle bulb. Aftermarket AutoZone/Walmart does not have the anti vibration built into it. The first one probably was defective and had a short life.
Funny, I'll admit your idea made no sense to me, but I checked and sure enough that bulb was burnt out too, probably for a long time. With the chrome cover you can hardly see the light unless you're behind the bike in the dark. Anyways, I checked it out, pulled it off the bike, cleaned up the connections, checked for shorts and done some voltage tests and all seems good. Replaced bulb and hope for the best. Thanks guys.

I was frequently changing front signal bulbs on my 97 (never the rear). I never understood why the left burned out more often than the right. But I was replacing one or the other every week or two. Spring of 2011 I went with all LEDs and haven't had a single issue since then. I went with the higher quality LEDs from Custom Dynamics. They're extremely bright and have a lifetime warranty ... but of course they're not cheap.
Same here, Rich. I put LED's in and haven't had a problem since.
