Default Considering a 2003 Heritage Classic

I’m thinking of adding a garage-mate to my Dyna... moving to the dark side of the “B” motor for a smoother ride for these old bones. I have a lead on a 2003 Heritage Classic with low miles. The bike is out of town so before I venture out I wanted to get some feedback on this model/year. Was 2003 a good year for the Heritage? Are there any known concerns/problems that I should look for besides the usual wear and tear items? TIA

Cam tensioners in the 03 were about the only issue......

Mine has 48K miles and it's time to have them done....

Other than that.... Ride it and enjoy......

If it's still in 88" form, you may want to upgrade to a 95", but that's personal preference.

You're also used to a 6 speed in the Dyna.... But I don't see the need for that either.

Cam tensioners were hit or miss on these. Some wore prematurely fast and caused all kinds of problems. I would inspect them regularly to be safe. Other than that, there is some nit picky stuff. For example, in 03 they stopped using the Timken bearing in the lower end. Not a big deal unless you want to build the motor. The heads don't flow nearly as well as the 2006 and up. The lighting was improved in 2005. The 6 speed came along in 2007 with the 96 and hydro cam tensioning. In 2008 they changed the swingarms.

I have an 03. Found it with 1,300 miles on it. The low miles meant two problems. The tires were aged and the high pressure fuel line o-rings had dried out.

I did the can and cam tension adjuster replace this pas winter and the bike runs great.

Have fun.
