These rush mufflers are installed on a 2012 heritage. The mufflers have about 2000 miles on them and are starting to turn yellowish where they connect to the head-pipe. The bottom muffler seems to be the worst but it's starting to appear on the top also. The heritage is completely stock so modifications aren't the cause. I've had the rush mufflers before without any problems so does the 2012's run that much hotter to cause this? Not quite sure if it's a warranty issue with rush or if i need mufflers with heat shields. Has others had this problem?
I believe this is caused by heat from a too lean mixture. Don't know that any of the pipe manufacturers will warranty this. The new bikes are programmed lean to meet emission requirements.
Seems to me if it is a problem with the newer v-twin (running too hot for rush mufflers to maintain their chrome finish) there should be some kind of warning on their product or they should at least supply heat shields so at least the discoloring would be hidden. It seems like you are all telling me that the 2012's run too lean so this product just won't handle the heat???

I'll need to know what size baffles are in the mufflers. The larger the baffle, the greater the chance tuning will be required. I also noticed you are in eastern Oregon. The elevation will also increase the chances of requiring tuning.
Please let me know the baffle size or part number for the mufflers. Pictures always help and come out best when taken outside on a sunny day with the chrome in the shade and no flash. You can post them on the forum or email. I'll PM my info.
I can't comment until I've seen some pictures but I feel this should be said... I've noticed an increase this year on discoloring due to hand oil on the pipes from installation. If you install the mufflers with perfectly clean hands they still need to be cleaned before firing up the bike. If you place a hand around the muffler as if you are installing it and the discolored area matches the palm, its due to not cleaning them. This would not be covered under warranty.
If our baffle size and tuning guidelines are followed, we will warranty discolored pipes. There are many processes during the manufacturing and coating process that can cause discoloration at normal heat levels. Discoloring is caused by heat but the reason normal temps cause pipes to discolor can be a result of the mufflers being polished to thin or not enough nickel coating under the chrome film.
Sorry you are having these issues. Please let me know the part number of your mufflers and if any tuning has been done. Pictures will also help. Then we can figure out what is causing the discoloring.

Due to the baffle size and riders location tuning could be the problem here. There are some special circumstances that lead to the bike not being tuned. To sum it up he thought it would be ok since he used the 2.00" with a stock intake. That usually is ok for most bikes but I believe the elevation in their area is affecting this. Dealer didn't notify him this could be an issue due to his elevation and no instructions were included. We are replacing the set under warranty and dropping down the baffle size to 1.75". I have also mentioned in PM's that tuning still might be required even with the smaller baffle size. Most people can use the 1.75" with no issues on a stock bike but I think Loujconst's location/elevation is causing a lean condition.
