Default Considering apes for my Deluxe. Advice?

Hi all,

I am new to the forum and learning a lot from everyones experience, I am just finishing up my first year of riding.

I got a new Deluxe in January and have done a few mods (Heritage Springer seat, V&H BSS, K&N high flow ac, etc) but the latest change I am thinking about is apes.

Two Questions:

1) Do apes ruin the classic vibe of the Deluxe?

2) At 6'1" what are the best size apes for me and the bike?

Thanks for your thoughts!

If you search the board for pictures & threads, you'll come across a ton of set-ups. Seems like 16-18" apes are standard for your height. Apes do give the Deluxe a classic look IMHO. But, there is a lot involved (as I'm finding out now) with going to tall bars. I am going the cheaper route with a set of 16" Chubby's. I can always upgrade to more expensive bars like Carlinis down the road.

1. Not remotely.

2. I'm 6' and run 16"ers on my softail. I certainly like that setup, but like virtually every other thing about bikes and riding, it is a personal preference.

I think apes add to the vibe of a bike. I'm 5'11" and run 16" chubby bars on my Fatboy and they feel great. Don't skimp on a cheap set. This is one area of the bike people notice right up front.

Save yourself some work and get them from a shop that custom builds them with switches and cables already run. You can even buy them with the throttle and clutch cables already run internally in them too. It cost more upfront, but it saves you the headache of doing it yourself.

I am 6' and have 16" (really 17.5") Carlini Flying Apes on a Deluxe and 18" Wild One Chubby Psycho Apes on a Heritage. The grips are maybe 1" above my shoulders -- but you can roll the bars forward or back as needed. I would recommend 16" or 18". The apes are much more comfortable than the Deluxe stock bars (and look a lot better). SJ Ron

A good question to answer is "why do you want them?" Looks? Comfort? Both? are you going to want to run with a windshield when you travel on long trips? Just a run around town kind of bike? How you answer should help you define what to get as well. too many guys like the looks of something and throw them on their bikes without thinking about it and then end up not liking them. Try and sit on a few that have them first, it really helps the process.

Good question and good advice yzergod. I am considering them for a few different reasons: stock bars feel a bit low, the look of apes has been really growing on me, I do most of my riding local/around town and I even saw a few windshield solutions/ideas with apes on the forum if I do want to use it on the freeway.

I like your thought of sitting on a few bikes with apes to get a feel first........I am leaning more and more towards doing it!

Really appreciate the input everyone!
