Ok , I see , my mistake, the FL's have a different set up than the FX's, you have to do the fall away proceedure on your model to set the bearings preload, plus grease the head, there should be a fitting on there, sorry for the mis understanding.
I went to sears bought a 1 1/2in socket 3/4 drive, a 3/4 to 1/2in adapter, 6in extention and a 1/2in drive torque wrench, got home, took the cap off and found a 3/4 inch nut...Back to Sears I go...
It is explained in the factory manual pretty well, it consists of the swing of the front end a set amount that is adjusted by the amount of pre load on the bearing in the neck, with the bike off the ground
My 05 FatBoy has the same symptoms you have described, Luv2ride. I need to pick up the service manual to learn the fall away procedure. I am curious to what you ended up doing, and how every thing turned out.
Aloha,
This is my first post on this forum. I have been googling the web looking for this problem and found this thread. I had the same problem with front end clunk & wobble on my 04 FLSTC. This is a daily rider with 25000 miles on it. Well the problem just became clear. My left slider tube blew oil all over me and my scoot. I nursed it home and per the manual pulled off the wheel & fender. While loosening the slider tube cap, the fork started sliding out of the tree and I caught it just before it hit the ground. To make a long story short, I found the pinch bolt broken. This allowed the fork tube to spin in the tree to the point that the fork tube plug un-screwed. After seeing that, I checked the other side and found the pinch bolt on the other fork tube broke. I don't know what's the deal with these bolts but a grade 5 bolt shouldn't just snap like these did. This is worthy of a recall. I have never hit anything or had an accident So I'm on the phone to the the motor company in the morning. I'll keep y'all posted
Aloha
Jim
