Default 05 fatboy front end clanking

Hey everyone, I getting a clanking, almost solid sounding noise from the front end around the headlight. at first it was a tinny sound, but i got rid of that by takeing off the tree cover then puting it back on. Now i have a dense sound come from the same area...It only happends when i hit a bump in the road.

Sounds like you have to retorque the front steering head nut. A very common thing, HD upped the torque from around 35 lbs to 100 lbs I believe because of this problem. I did mine before they changed the specs and set it at 70 lbs and the noise is gone now. Mine was finger tight when i heard the sound on a new bike.

Thanks for the info... does that jump from 35 to 100 seem alittle too high ?? 100lbs could brake somthing unless you mean inch pounds and not foot pounds??

Nope, thats FT/lbs ,NOT inch pounds, go with the 70 lbs as I did. The later year manuals have upped the torque to 100 from the lower 35 ft/lbs because of this particular problem.

Not to cause a scare or anything, but I watched a 2002 Fat Boy go into a head shake at about 50 mph this spring. The bike crossed the center lane and hit a truck head on. I was about 2 bike lengths behind him. I don’t know exactly what caused it to happen, because it happened so fast. I know it wasn’t a blowout. Don’t chance it. Get it fixed.
