I have an Adventure Power battery in my 99 Softail Custom. It is six years old, and has never been on a tender. It is an AGM battery, and they are about $80.00 from Amazon. Mine is still going strong so I do not need one.

I think some of you guys got the wrong idea, that I'm downing Odyssey batteries. My first post stated I was about to purchase the battery and right before I did ran across some potential issues on the charging. Anyway, I sent an email to Odyssey asking some questions below is the email and response. They still did not answer the question about the factory stator being enough to adequately charge so I will respond and try to get that info.

My email:
I am interested in a battery for my 2005 Fatboy. I was looking at the PC545 or the PC545MJ. My bike has a 95 inch motor with 10.5:1 compression with compression release valves.
I ran across some information on the charging requirements for this battery and need some clarification.
I have a Harley Davidson battery tender and also a Shumacher tender. Will either of these work with the battery?
Will my factory stator properly charge the battery?
If either of these are not sufficient how does that affect the warranty?
I really like the specifications on this battery but wnat to make sure it is the right one for my application.
Any help is most appreciated

Odyssey response:
The ODYSSEY recommended replacement battery for the OEM JIS battery sized TX20L-BS for the 1450cc 2000-2006 model FLST HD motorcycle is the PC545MJ which unfortunately is not a drop in replacement. The TX20L-BS is an18Ah rated battery with dimensions 175 x 87 x 155mm and right positive terminal configuration compared to the PC545MJ which is a 12Ah rated battery with dimensions 178 x 86 x 132mm.

Due to the difference in height a shim may be required beneath the battery. For shimming purposes, hard plastic or wood is recommended instead of foam or rubber since the latter can become compressed and allow for movement and in some cases intensify any vibration that could cause premature failure of the battery. The battery is vibration resistant, not vibration proof.

Also, due to the reserve capacity difference in size from the OEM to the ODYSSEY recommended PC545MJ, there is a technical alert that discusses the use of the PC545 in custom V-Twin motorcycle applications that I would highly recommend reading before purchasing this battery with 2/3 the reserve capacity. With its low internal resistance it has more than enough CA for the first 5 seconds at a high state of charge to start most larger bikes however it does not take as much to bring the battery down to a state of discharged that it could cause issues with starting.

Maintainers are frequently recommended to maintain the battery and prevent parasitic loads from over-discharging the battery. Unfortunately many standard maintainers are programmed to maintain most batteries on the market however the ODYSSEY battery does require that the batteries be maintained at a slightly higher voltage than most other batteries on the market so a list of approved 12V chargers has been provided and is linked on the ODYSSEY website Product Support page for your reference. Most chargers today float at too low of a voltage and will bring the battery down and maintain it in an undercharged condition causing premature sulfation and premature failure with lost capacity over time until the battery will not take or maintain a charge due to consistent undercharging or being maintained in an undercharged condition. In many cases, standard chargers go into float too soon for the ODYSSEY battery to be considered fully charged and the float mode has to complete the charging process.

Thank you for contacting EnerSys/ODYSSEY.

This is what Odyssey sent me in response to the question on the stator. Again, I'm not downing them but I believe this is useful information for anyone considering the PC545 battery for their bike.

It's an article out of Iron Works Magazine in a PDF file. I couldn't figure out how to post it and show up on the forum so here is a link.
