I too am in the buy used category. If the persons garage is clean and organized I bet they pampered the bike. But either way you could take bike to a mechanic, an independent would be my choice but Harley works too and have them do complete inspection. I would never buy used from or new for that matter, too many good people need to sell their bikes.

It happens though. Everyone has bad stories about their experience at one place or another. My personal experience was good, but Im no where near you.
This is pretty typical in Northern VA. Remember up here it seems we're in a bubble that's almost immune to economic downturn and there's a distinct attitude of elitism. No wonder the politicians can't identify with the rest of the country.

There are tons of Craigslist ads up here for some pretty nice, low mileage bikes. That's a good point about buying from the dealer, you WILL wanna change a ton of stuff to start anyway.

Oh, and I'm only a couple of miles away from Patriot and go there a decent amount. Never bought new from 'em but they seem cool enough. Beware the upsell at the parts counter if you go too often. They seems to be pushing LED headlights these days. Maybe I look like a bike sucker but....

I went to Waugh Enterprise its about an hour or so away from Fairfax. I got my slim for 16,000 out the door. Everywhere else was 16.8k and above. ALso 2013 models are out so you might be able to pick up a 2012 for a good price.

Waugh is family owned and operated and you can tell when you go there. They were super friendly and actually approached and talked to me.

I never really liked patriot. Always seemed so arrogant and on a high horse. Whenever i walked in i would never get approached or acknowledged. Doesn't help that i look young or that i am korean.

I agree with everyone about the used bike. Its coming up on fall/winter so people will be selling. I would have gone used but the slims that were up for sale were a couple hundred off from a new one so i just went new.

If you have to finance you can just go through harley... the seller will take the bike to harley and they even check it out for you to make sure every things in good working order.

If you have any specific questions about my waugh experience shoot me a PM.
And be safe riding... DMV drivers are oblivious to bikers and make a habit of trying to run us over any chance they get. This is definitely a place where loud pipes are necessary.

TigerVMI:

It took about 6 weeks of being patient before I found the right bike at the right price.

My advice is this: First, know exactly the bike or bikes you want. Do not under any circumstance "settle" for a bike. If you want a Heritage or Deluxe in two tone or black that is in PERFECT condition, by gosh hold out for it.

Next, don't rule out a dealer for used. In SoCal I looked at a gaggle of marginal private party bikes before my local dealer called to say they had a perfect, low miles, 2007 Deluxe for a SMOKIN price. The dealer put on new tires, changed fluids, road tested it, threw in some extras, put me in the HD MVP discount club and I was treated with more respect and care than I have ever experienced when buying new cars for 3x the price.

Good luck and DO NOT SETTLE for anything less than what you want.

Mike

I went to the dealer in Annapolis. I knew what I wanted and what I was willing to pay. I walked out the door when they wouldn't give me a descent counter offer. In the end they called me back and worked with me. They have 3 dealerships so if they don't have it there they may at one of the others. Good luck, but be ready to walk if they won't budge!

Well, a Korean has no business in an American Iron Harley shop!
Just kidding. I have an adopted Korean sister, and I love her to death.

Yeah, you can figure that in the first five years, Harleys depreciate about $1000 per year. If a dealer offers me $200 to $500 or so on last year's model, I'll probably pass.

It's pretty hard to find dealers who will sell for less than MSRP. It's hard enough, that I'm guessing there are contractual prohibitions against it. But there's wiggle room with add-on charges like setup and shipping, and also dealer installed options and parts. Maybe they can't sell for less than MSRP on the current year, but maybe they can throw in $1000 or $2000 of stuff, or an extended warranty to make the sale.
I've gotten some pretty good concessions and discounts on an "out the door" price, even when the base price wouldn't budge.

LoL actually i get the "you are the only asian that i know that rides a harley" alot.

As far as buying used... i would not buy used from a harley dealer. You can get a better deal froma private sale and have a harley finance to have them inspect.
