All,

I'm starting to shop around Northern Virginia for a Softail. I've been to Patriot, Ft. Washington, Witts, and East Coast so far. Any suggestions on where to go, not go and why I should/shouldn't consider one or the other would be helpful. Also, any suggestions on what to expect at purchase and how best to negotiate a lower price would be great.

I will go with financing and cash in hand.

Additionally,

I've started to get the impression that Harley is, or at least thinks it is, immune to the economy with consistent statements concerning pricing being higher than MSRP. Is this just typical dealer crap to get a higher OTD price or do they really have very little room to negotiate on a new bike.

I'm not sure if you are buying used or new but the best way to go is to buy a used bike from a PRIVATE seller. There is a huge amount of used low miles bikes out there that are very cheap! The problem with buying new is that you will immediately have to replace the stock pipes and will end up wanting to put a bunch of stuff (hand grips etc. etc.) on the bike right away. Shortly thereafter you will want to do a stage 1 upgrade and the list goes on and on. You can buy a used one with ALL this stuff already done and save a bundle. Upgrades on Harleys add ABSOLUTELY nothing to the value of a used bike. (Why I do not know). But you can buy a upgraded bike used for the same price as a bone stock one...
If warranty is an issue you can buy a used bike from a private seller and Harley will finance it and sell you an extended warranty.
I bought a 2010 Heritage Classic with 1100 miles for $14.999 and it had a bunch of stuff added on the bike.

They can negotiate. Just call a couple dealers and ask their best price and what else will they include. Figure you can get about 15% off the msrp. Make sure you tell them your not paying for set up and shipping fees.

I've never understood the arrogance of telling you they sell them 15% above MSRP and then cut you a deal by selling it at MSRP.
It happens though. Everyone has bad stories about their experience at one place or another. My personal experience was good, but Im no where near you. I got a fair deal on my slim and a great deal on my trade. I didn't feel cheated. I guess that's what really matters.

Can you make a trip to Rossmeyers in Daytona? I've bought from them twice. They can sell for less because they do so much volume. Ask for TJ and tell him Aaron sent you. They generally do not charge for shipping and set up. Rarely will you get less than MSRP. They (all dealers) would rather give you gift cards for merchandise. At Pensacola HD yesterday there were several bikes with 1000 gift cards attached to them with purchase.

I just looked at a '12 v rod an they immediately offered it to me for 15K plus tax prep an doc fees an throw in a 1500 gift card. The msrp is a few hundred over 17K. If you want a new '12 it's a good time. Maybe get two dealers bidding against each other.

Hi, I too would say buy used, low miles.
You can do much better if you look around.
There are a ton of low miles used bikes out there and those selling them need the cash, or they wouldn't be selling, you can go cash in hand and do very well.

I wouldn't buy another brand new Harley again, I did it once sort of a right of passage, I had to see for myself.
I wouldn't do it again though.

I just bought an 07 police Road king with 32k miles in it with some cool mods and add ons I wanted for 10.5$ every other 07 I saw in this shape was 13 to 17 specifically at dealers selling used, most had the 96" motor I got the 103" 6 speed cruise and police wiring harness and stator, plus the 9 spoke rims, a lot more bike for a lot less money.

Private sales is the way to go, just get all your cash in hand.
Why finance, just put away the payments you would make for a few months and add it to your cash for bike fund, so you can go out and find a local ride and pay cash and done with it.
Plus you can get a better deal in Winter than you can in summer, well depending on where you are buying, go to upstate NY in Feb and I bet you save another 25%lol

I see a loot of guys on nice bikes, and they owe up to 7 years, lol I pay cash and walk away with my title no more payments for me and I get what I want in a bike.
I strongly suggest get a nice used bike from a private seller.

Default Thanks

All,

Thanks for the advice, keep it coming.

Any chance there's a link to a buyers guide or a search I can run? I know I've seen one on here but cannot find it now that I'm looking.

Cycletrader.com or craigslist will give you a lot of options on used bikes.
