Default Shocks for Heritage

I have a 2002 Heritage with around 31,000 miles and I want to replace the shocks. It tends to bottom out a lot when riding two up anymore. I DON'T want to spend 1500 bucks on the elaborate air systems etc. I just want a good quality, replacement shock that will last a while without spending my life savings. Any suggestions from folks with experience replacing their shocks with OEM or aftermarket items?

Have you set the shocks to the firmest setting?
