After reading all these comments I guess the cheapest way would be to try a windshield out and see if that helps. The bars really arent that tall you have to remember the seat on a deluxe is so tall that they 18's feel like 16's. Now when I had the 18's on my springer the felt a mile away but I was running a C&C lo pro seat. I still have a slight bend in my arms so I know they aren't to high. The spacer idea is an option also, never thought about that.
Depends what year and model you compare it to. Deluxe seat used to be an inch lower than Heritage for example. Swap the seat 18's are really 19's, 20's etc.

Well for the most part any lo pro seat you get that being a C&C, LePera, Mustang ETC.. is at least 1 inch lower than the stock seat. If I swapped the seat out with the new Deluxe spring seat setup they would be 16.5's...
i have the exact same bars you do and yes i run the detachable windsheid on long weekend trips. for sureit will make all the difference in the world. i would suggest getting the windsheild ,i think you will be happy with the ride and also being able to keep the look your going for.it has no fitment problems at all. having the curve in the bars helps this to be done .i have no issues at all neither will you.mabye try pulling them back tword you to help alleviate that wind sail problem, but windsheid will fix you for sure .. tom

Sweet! thanks for answering that for me, I am going to jump on a shield ASAP!
I had a Honda with wind problems. I tied a small tool bag to the bars. Wasn't as good as a windshield, but broke up the wind enough to be livable. Mount it right above your risers.
Apes or no, without a windshield you're going to get blown around. I just finished a 250 mile ride and I don't question my choice of putting apes on at all. My shoulders and neck got all cramped up with the stock bars, but I don't feel it at all with the apes, cuz I'm more relaxed just hangin' on 'em. If you go with lower bars, make sure you get a windshield, too, as has already been alluded to, here. That's gonna offer the biggest relief. My *** feels the long trips more than anything, but that's a different thread...
I have always wondered why you guys push your bars forward instead of lining up with the forks. Is is because you lean back to much if they are lined up? Or is it because you like to lean forward more? Just curious. I have only ridden with buckhorns for the last 30 years, and find them very comfortable for me. I have sat on a few bikes with apes, but not ridden with them.

Well, it looks better IMO. But not only that, it makes me sit more upright instead of slouching in the saddle and feels much better on my back. But it also looks better....did I mention that? Lol

Cuz it makes us look more like real badass bikers, instead of the posers that we really are.
