first question to ask is if you always run with your windshield on. From what I've learned about them, the windshield Boom! has better bass and sound than the bar mounted Boom! I don't have the Boom! but I went with the bar mounted set-up so I could run without my shield and still have audio. I have a bag on my windshield and use it for my digital camera, cell phone, bandana, maps, Chapstick, etc. when I go on longer rides. It comes in handy! So, you have to answer whether sound quality trumps storage capability for you. HTH.
I have the windshield mount on my fatboy and the wife has the handlebar mount on her Sportster. The windshield mount does have a bit better bass and I have not had any problems yet with cracking. On the wife's Sportster with the handlebar speakers she can not use a windshield bag because the speakers are in the way. I don't know if this would be the same on your Heritage or not. Now on a side note you will want a good MP3 player Ipod works great. I tried a Sansa Clip and it was not very loud. It just does not have enough output. I went with a Cowon MP3 player which has one of the highest output levels on the market. Now I can hear clear music at 70 MPH.
I can barely here my car radio rolling down the road, let alone on a Harley (over the wind and pipes). 'course my hearing has progressed to the stage where I'm just trying to save what I've got left.
Man, you've got to really want some tunes to mount those things on your bars. If I had to put them somewhere, I'd choose shield. I doubt you can hear much while crusing at 70 if you don't have a shield on anyway.
Hey guys, thanks for the input! I decided to go with the bar mounted speakers. I don't ride w/ my shield all the time, nor do I wanna have to worry about the windshieald cracking on me, especially since I just ordered a new smoke tinted shield.
Plus it does seem rather easy to just take my shield off w/ the speaker mounted to it if someone wanted to make a quick get away w/ it.
I don't use tunes enough. For the long haul I picked up a Bluetooth unit sena smh10 for my helmet. Just didn't like the clutter. I have heard both and like the sounds of the windshield unit better. Fwiw
Btw. The sena sounds great. Does intercom and phone too if that matters. Didn't for me, don't really use those all that much but they are there. 12 talk/listen time
