Trying to install rush slip ons on my 2011 fat boy- can't get to the six bolts that attach the mufflers to the bracket. Any advise on removing and reinstalling the six bracket bolts that hold the mufflers on- 4 bolts on bottom pipe and 2 bolts on top pipe. Anyone that has put slip ons on their fat boy I would appreciate some tips.
I got to mine using a 3/8 inch combo wrench. Some you can get to, albiet tight quarters, on top, some better reached from bottom lying on the ground.
Just takes some time & patience. Good luck.
First of all they are 3/8". I used a 1/4 drive with a flexible head and standard shallow socket. I used a wrench on the one you cant socket out. Spray some rust penetrant or wd40 on the clamp areas to help loosen them when its time to work them off. Pull up and down and side to side to open up the clamped mufflers. It will not hurt the exhaust pipes. I installed my 2inch rush pipes a couple weekends ago. They suprised me how damn good they sound. By the way, the bolts have thread lock on them, and have to be wrenched almost the whole way out
As stated, a wrench with a flexible head is the way to go. You'll go nuts trying to use something else, and you'll probably end up slipping off the bolt and scratching your new pipes in the process.
Finally put them on today. Very nice sound. Rush slip ons 1.75 baffle. I had to special order a tool to do the job. I had a 1/4 drive swivel with a 3/8 socket attached and I had some clearance issues on one of the bolts that attached the muffler to the bracket. I bought a snap on 3/8 swivel socket, 1/4 drive. It was around 1/2 inch shorter than what I had been using and did the job. The only other problem I had was my hands are big and was an issue starting the bolts after installling the new mufflers. Had some help from my daughter who started the bolts with no problems. Entire job took around 2 hours. What a difference in sound.
