Default Handlebar Swap-DONE!

After contemplating for months I decided to bite the bullet and replace the beach bars my dad put on my bike when he bought it new. Since I bought the bike I wanted to make a change for "my" comfort and stock CHROME Heritage bars seemed to be best way to go. I ordered the bars, and contemplated doing the job myself, with my brothers help. After thinking about it we decided to do it, it cant be that bad right?? Since the beach bars were internally wired we had to pull the tank to get to the wiring connectors. The service manual decribed everything to do and it was a PIECE OF CAKE!! I was worried to death about pulling the tank, but its not a hard job at all! Heck, it was a lot easier than putting on the adjustable passenger footpeg mounts!! Once the tank was off, everything else was pretty straight forward and going back together with everything was relatively simple. Only thing different was the wiring was going on the outside of the bars this time. (I know, I'm cheap...I bought stock bars instead of 1 1/4" bars.....but the stockers are $69.99!!)

Got the wiring re-ran, got the bars installed, tank back on, zip-tied everything, checked all the bolts, put some gas in it, started it, and then took it for a test drive.....WOW....these bars are COMFORTABLE!!!! Hate that I waited so long to do it! Plus, its a great feeling to know that I did the job myself and didnt pay anyone my money to do a job that wasnt that hard.

Here's a couple of pics of the bars after they were installed. Makes the bike look more stock, but the comfort level is better.

Looks great. I didn't know you have to pull the tank to swap the bars.

Usually you dont have to pull the tank. But, the old beach bars were internally wired. The wires leave the bars and go under the tank to their connections. Instead of cutting wires and soldering I wanted to do it the right way and took the connectors apart , pulled the wire through the old bars, then re-installed. Makes me sleep better at night knowing i didnt cut a wire.

That's cool. The last couple of bar swaps I did I just unhooked the fuel line at the injector manifold and slid the tank back which left the plugs visible. I ran the wires internally on the apes I installed on my old Dyna and the ones I just installed on my Deluxe. It sure makes for a cleaner look.

In retrospect, I very well could have just slid the tank back. I learned a lot about my bike as I do every time I do work on it. Taking the tank off literally took about 10 minutes so I wasnt out much labor doing it.
