Default Oil leak

Hey guys and gals. I am a complete newbie and have almost 0 mechanical knowledge. But I do have a real thirst to know, understand, and learn how to work on this thing. Anyone know what this thing is, and why there is silicone sealant around it? it seems to be leaking small amounts of oil and there is some caked oil on the underside of the frame.

That is the crank postion sensor. It could have been leaking and the owner hit it with gasket sealer to keep it from leaking more.

sorry, but the part circled is the wring harness coming from the stator through the primary to the voltage regulator. the crank sensor is above the circled part.

My bad. Guess I wasn't really paying attention, as usual. It's amazing I get anything done like this.

thank you for that information! Should have that silicon sealant around it or should have some sort of finished gasket or housing of some sort? Should I just get more sealant or should I look at replacing that harness and if so how big of a deal is that?

What FroggyFatBoy said ... is where the wires from the stator come through the casing.

The rubber plug probably cracked ... you can either clean it up and reapply some heat/oil resistant sealant again, or you can replace the whole stator as that rubber plug is not available separately.

The new stator for your bike is about $145.00 but it will probably cost lots more to have it replaced by a mechanic.

The attached image is from Ronnie's site. Added an arrow to point at the bit that is leaking.

Select your year and model. and then "electrical - alternator & regulator" select the part(s) you want, add to basket and then go to checkout. The HD part number(s) will show up. you do not have to buy.
