Default BDL Question

New member here...

I have a 03 Softail with a BDL belt drive and a BDL Ultimate clutch. Once hot the clutch chirps like the discs are glazed when you release the clutch on take off. I have been told its normal but I was going to tear into it to look...thought I would ask here first.

buddy of mine has a chopper with an open belt drive, and i've seen a few harley's open belt drives on them (can't say they were BDL's), but all of them made that noise. I always thought it sounded like something was going to break, but apparently they just sound like that.

Well there is the rattle sound they make when you pull the clutch in and the discs and floaters rattle around, yea that part normal...but beyond that mine has this annoying chirp/squeak/squeal as you take off from a dead stop. I thought it might be a bearing on the shaft but then someone told me it was normal...

I have tried to reach BDL a couple of times but they aren't easy to reach when I have tried.

I put a 3" BDL on my last bike. only put about 5k on it before I sold it, but, i never had any chirping as your describing. only "normal" thing for those is the rattling, which you've already addressed. i'd look into the clutch pack like you were leaning towards. sorry i have nothing else useful. good luck.

My Primo started doing this recently. I had no idea what the chirp was. I head it when I am downshifting. The clutch still work fine so I am just leaving it as is for now. Glad I read this as every time I heard it I was wondering what it was. It started after I had a chrome cover put on the stator. I'm going to adjust the clutch and see if that helps when I get a chance.

Is it only when you release the clutch, our when you take off? I'm guessing hogpro needs to wax his drive belt, but I'm not sure if the open belt would chirp except under load.

That's what I'm thinking Lund. I don't have an open belt but my drive belt was doing that. You can run a bar of soap or wax around both sides to see if it stops. If it does, then your belt is probably out of alignment.

Its only on take off from a dead stop, quiet between shifts when riding. More pronounced when its hot, not really anything when its cold and of course a little worse taking off uphill from a stop.
