Default Service manual

Hello all, Does your factory service manual or clymers manual explain the need for more primary oil when removing the primary cover as oppesed to just draining and refilling? I've been watching U-tube videos and somebody said to put 40 something ounces if you took cover off but 38 if you were just draining it. I know, I know...buy a manual you say. I'm holding out for funds.

your owners manual has the procedure and the right qty. I don't have any idea about how you would change the oil without taking the primary cover off, short of turning your bike upside down and filling it from the drain.

varying amounts because if you were to just pull the drain plug you'll get most of the oil out, but there will always be some left in, trapped along the internal ridges. If you pull the cover off, the little bit that was stuck in will come out

I just drain it with the plug and fill it up till the oil hits the clutch basket. Think it was 32 oz. It's good to pull the primary cover off every other time just to ck things out or if there is an excessive amount of filings stuck to the magnet on drain plug. With the auto chain tensioners life is usually pretty good in the primary. My .02

When you say primary cover are you talking about the whole outer side of the primary or just the derby cover?

Additionally, my Harley Factory manual for 02 Softail gives a fluid range. Without opening the book, I think it states 24 to 28 ounces. As Snowyone stated, you must also visually inspect the fluid level.

FDB2007, I was talking about the entire outer cover. Pulling the derby cover wouldn't affect how much comes out of the drain. I will be replacing my outer Primary cover due to some road rash a previous owner caused and wondered if anyone else had heard it's a different amount of oil to go back in. Hopefully I will get my manual before I undertake this.

I guess a better question is where the fluid level should come up to on the clutch basket when i refill it. That's also up for debate i guess. Mine's a 93 heritage if it matters.
