You can't use a 44mm carb in a stock bike. Even if you had a 95" with cams and ported heads, you'd still use the stock 40mm. I don't know much about exhaust, but pulling the baffles may hurt the performance as well. There are other ways to get more performance out of your engine, depending on budget.

Well I agree that a 44 m.m. C.V. won't help a stock 88, a hot 95" will benefit at high rpms. If you're after performance take the money from the carb and buy a decent 2 into 1 exhaust.

I second the warnings using a 44mm carb. A mild 88ci really has no use for something that big.

Drilling out the baffles will mostly just get you noise.

Google Joe Minton, he is a tech writer for a magazine, one that folded. Probably forgot more about carbs and Harley's then most people that work on them know. Lots of info on exhaust and carb tuning.

You can cut the baffles down to about 4 or 5 inches long and still have good back pressure for bottom end torque then rejet your old carb. No rocket science, it will breath better. Then cam it and single fire ignition.

Removing the baffles will give you no back pressure and it will NOT run as good. Free flowing exhaust with a little back pressure works well.

Only thing that will hurt the motor is running way too lean. More air flow needs more gas. This will show up on the spark plug color. Blk is too rich. white too lean. tan just right. or have a shop tune it.
