Default 1998 softtail engine removal

Hi, i am taking my bike completely apart to paint frame and all. Can someone offer some advise as if i should take the primary off first or can i leave it on when removing motor? and tips that would help me out .....is it better to take tranny out first? thanks

i'd take the primary off. would make it a lot less awkward when pulling the motor, you'd be able to pull it from either direction with a lot more ease
