Default Internal wiring on apes.

I am going to 16" Gangsters this winter. I wanted to do internal wiring but this guy at work says I can't because I have fuel injection which means I have two cables on my throttle assembly, 1 cable to throttle it the other to back out of it. Can this be true? I have 40 years of riding in but zero experience with apes and how they set up. Pictures would be great too if anyone has them..

Not true. Find apes on this forum with exposed wires. I would bet u almost can't. Usually you'll have three cables running the outside. Throttle, idle (return, whatever) and front brake.

Oops, clutch cable on left side of bars. All wiring fished through the bars and out your risers.

I got 16" king apes & I just ran wiring inside them. Kept brake, idle & throttle outside. I think you got to buy a special throttle to run cables inside. So I just bought the Magnum "black pearl" cables so it looks good as my bars.

Are you looking at doing just control wires inside or everything to include throttle, brake and clutch? If all you are going to need 1.5 inch bars and special cables to run inside. I have never do all inside but do a search i remember a few threads on it, fireman1501 did it a recently one of the brothers from Hawaii did it. And yes to the first question modern bikes have two throttle cables, or even newer have throttle by wire.

Big difference between internal wiring and running throttle cable inside

You can run an internal throttle but it is a seperate aftermarket assembly. As for 2 throttle cables - I have EFI and I just got rid of the return cable so I only have one. (my wiring and front brake are internal though)

As was said, wiring can be run inside regardless, throttle you will need an internal throttle setup, brake you will need the Russell pro system line and fittings. I ran everything in mine. Super clean and not too hard to do if you have patience and some skills.

And yes, modern setups have 2 throttle cables. One for throttle, and the other a DOT mandated return cable for safety. In case the throttle sticks open, it can be forced closed with the grip.

Midgard & Jreichert, can u just eliminate the idle cable? I have seen la cycles kit for carburetors and they have have a spring. What is the non-DOT process for efi?

Yes, the idle return cable can be eliminated on EFI models, but you'll no longer be DOT compliant. Might be up to your state if its legal or not, but I haven't found anything written for any state that has a regulation for throttle return cables. It may fall under the catch all "OE equipment" clause.

The internal throttle setup works on a single cable only. Some internal throttles have a return spring built into the assembly to assist in throttle return, but its really not needed. The exisitng return spring on the throttle body is all that's required. After all, in normal riding conditions barring any emergency throttle sticking, it's the throttle body return spring doing all the work anyway. The idle return cable is simply there as a safety precaution for the .000001% chance that your throttle will completely lock up in the full open position. It allows you to force the throttle closed again using the grip.
