So I got my 2008 Heritage about a month ago. It didn't come with the factory security installed. I want it to have a security system but i'm not sure if its something i can tackle myself. Should I just have the stealership do it for me? Does anyone have any idea how much they would charge to supply and install the unit? I'm sure i can do the install, but i'm not sure about marrying the key fobs. Is it really worth it? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
It's pretty easy, the most difficult part like you mentioned is marrying the fobs. The module itself is simple. I think it's underneath the seat. Unplug the old and plug in the new. And then follow the fob instructions to the letter. it took me several tries, but eventually, I got them programmed. And double check to make sure you actually don't have the security. I bought my bike used and wanted to add the security. So I bought the kit and then during the install, realized it already had the security module. I just didn't have the fobs. PM me if you're interested in my kit I never installed. It's for an '06, but might work with yours. It's not "smart" though. You need to press the button on the fob to arm and disarm.
Perhaps my security system on my 09 Heritage is different than the "norm" but when I added a second fob the dealer had to program it. My system does arm itself.
If you don't already have a factory system you might want to think about a manufacturer other then Harley. I have Harley's system on mine since it came that way but that doesn't mean it's the best or cheapest out there. Take a look at the aftermarket and you might find something better and or cheaper.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the factory security system part of the Turn Signal Sensor (TSS)?
On my 08 Sporty and 09 RK the TSM WAS the security system. It was a plug and play item that anyone could easily install. I also added the smart sirens and pagers to both the bikes. SUPER EZ INSTALL! Go for it!
