Why did Harley stop making the Softail Standard (or Custom)?
The CV on my Sporty hot rod works PERFECT.
Sounds like you got it figured....the early softies were cool, and the new ones as well, just need a slim or deluxe to start with. A slim is VERY close to optimum, but the big whale of a front tire must go!
Your Deuce is a DAMN good bike....fine tune it to where you want it and ride the **** out of it...it's a HARLEY, it'll take it, and can be rebuilt.
Damn, I need a 1984 FXST with chain, 4-spd, and I can convert it to CV and a modern 530 chain.

Said when I mentioned too bad it didn't come with one, "You didn't go out and put a hand crank on your car did you?"
Last one i saw was in 1988, and DAMN did I want it! Army Sergeant bought it new, and was a real rider, and bought it knowing what it was. It was cherry! Oriental blue.

The Best of Harley-Davidson for Lifelong Riders
21" front wheel.
I had the last year of the evo FXSTC which was a 99.
I never did like the skinny wheel and changed it to a 16" and put a fatboy front fender on it as the stock-er was not really a fender to me, more like a little piece of painted metal that didn't do much.
I thought saddlebags were handy too so I put a set of after market ones on.
I modified my softail, w hints of fatboy, and a heritage combined.
S&S Super E was a better carb too than was the CV.

[/IMG]It was dumped in favor of the ugly duckling/deuce in 2000.
Hence the name "deuce."
It was re-incarnated down the road again.
For those of you who want an FXST, there's plenty of them around.
Maybe in 20 or more years they might start to become a rare bird.
