My 01 deuce has 27k miles on it so i thought id check the cam chain tensioners. Lucky i did the primary was almost on the chain. Anyways when i pulled out the cams i noticed this on the rear. Does it need to be replaced? Any help would be great. Thanks.
Hard to tell with any certainty from that pic, but it sure looks like some excessive wear. I can see a "step" in the light reflection and that is not good. Can you feel an edge?
Based on what I see I'd say the cam needs replacement along with the bearings.
What does the bearing look like where that cam came from?
You've got some improper wear! Personally, I would replace both cams and perform a complete cam service to include front and rear cam bearings and Tensioners. Harley's Cam Service Kit #17045-99D includes everything needed except the tensioners which must be purchased separately.
Harley now sells Torrington Inner Cam Bearings. About 15 bucks each and superior to the stock bearings. You need Bearings=B148, Harley part number 24017-10. Ensure that when installing the inner cam bearings that the lettering on the bearings is facing outward.
Additionally, it's always wise to install new lifters with new cams.
