Good reminder.
Since the MSF classes, I tend to pay a lot more attention as to whether or not I'm riding in somebody's blind spot.
Just last summer I was cruising in the left lane when some dimwit (on a cell phone naturally) decided she wanted my spot. She never looked - they never do.

bout a year ago...I was in this same exact situation except, I was driver #1...motorcycle was tailgating driver #2 and started to turn right and I pulled out. Making it even worse, i was pulling a trailer. Thankfully there was no accident as i was able to accelerate and the motorcycle was able to move to the right and avoid me...now I am more alert when driving as well as riding when Im in this situation

As you can see on the diagram unit#1 line of sight and my location at that time prevented him from seeing me. There were also no other car behind us. Unit #2 turned his right turning signal and started to slow down to make his right turn. At this point driver of unit#1 decided to enter the intersection figuring there were no other vehicle on the roadway.

I saw what was happening and started to apply the brakes and a slow right steer. I could hear me rear tire start to screech and the bike start to slide left. I released the rear brake a little, straighten the bike and went around unit#1 (all was well).

A very important factor in this incident was not my driving skills but the fact that the driver of unit#1 never saw me and never stopped or slowed down. I think that if he would have seen me, he would have panicked, braked in the middle of the highway, and i would have never had the chance to go around him on the right.

I have been aware of this type of accident for many years because i was a police officer for 12 year and have investigated several of them. Many of you are probably aware of this type of situation. I have had several friends (not on mc) involved in this type of accident.

I was very upset not at the driver of unit #1 but at me for not paying attention. A split second of brain idle while driving and things can go wrong very fast.

So take care and be aware of this type of situation. It happens very often (just watch).

Great info and tips. Glad your ok...... Nobody should assume that there is not another VEHICLE behind one that you see..... DRIVER #1 IS TOTALLY AT FAULT. also........... people that text or talk on the celly SHOULD BE BEAT DOWN!!!!

Glad u made it out ok.
I agree with tbonetony i always force myself to be seen. I make sure drivers see me. I usually hug the left side of the lane but may go from left to right to catch peoples attention.
I dont have a get back whip but i can see how something waving in the air like that can get drivers attention.

It is easy to become complacent with your defensive riding skills

AND

it can happen to YOU !

Thanks for that! I try but not always, try to ride in the right lane. Not because of this but because it seems people want you to go faster than normal in the left lane.

Being safe on the road requires an active imagination. Try to anticipate all the stupid things all the other drivers might do. "That guy is going to decide at the last second not to take that off-ramp" "that guy thinks just because the guy in front of him turned left it's safe to turn left without looking" and so on and so on
