Default Fatboy Windshield question

Never liked the looks of a windshield on a Fatboy, but after the ride down and back to Daytona on I-95 I have had a change of heart. I want to go with one of the detachable HD windshields, either the king size or the nostalgic, but I have a question on the listed windshield heights. HD lists 18, 21, and 23 inch heights. Where exactly are these measurements taken from? Are they measured from the cutout for the headlight? I want to have a windshield I can look over, not through, and I don't want to end up with too high of a windshield from the start. Any help would be appreciated.

I think it's measured from the headlight cut-out.
I went with the 21" HD shield and then cutt it down by 2" to match my personal preference.

I went the same route. Bought the 21" and then had it cut down later to 17" .

I just added the "king-size" 18" H-D Quick-Detach to my Slim last week, (part number 57400111) and at 5' 7", I'm looking through it by a good 2"...
If I sit up perfectly straight, the top is about eyeball level.

I just went and measured, and it's exactly 18" from the top of the headlight to the top of the shield.
Just measuring from the headlight cutout up, it's 17.5"
/sorry for the crappy picture...

The dealer should have a windshield the can hold up to your bike, with you sitting on it, that has markings for the different heights of windshields so you can see what height would work for you.

^^^ what he said. They sell them in all sizes and can guide you to get the right one. I would rather buy the right one than a large one and have to cut it.

Check out Long Ride Shields. They make universal handlebar mounts in 3 different sizes. I'm planning on getting one. They cost $225.

Thanks for all of the replies. I didn't know about the dealer having a windshield with the different heights marked off. I'll take a ride to the dealer and check it out. Thanks again.
