i have read about exhaust wrap damaging headers by having them rust or crack, and how wrapping exhaust on newer efi bikes can make them run too lean and damage the engine. does anyone have experience with this? i was planning on wrapping my exhaust and didn't think it would make much of a difference aside from the look of the bike....
I have to be open and honest. I have never really been a big fan of wrapping the exhaust. It's not the look I like but having said that I have seen bikes that look very good with it. I just got the 3 pieces of my new head pipes on my 39" cholo's ceramic coated which in affect accomplishes the same thing so I hope that is NOT true. I have read and been told just the opposite. I have read or been told that the exhaust gases that are in a hotter pipe and the longer it is in there that it is actually better for the bike. I don't however know why that is true or if in fact it is true at all. I think the perfect guy to ask that question would be a guy who does Dyno work. Mine will be going for Dyno in a week or two. If I remember when I go to talk to the guy who will be dyno'ing my bike I will ask him what he knows about that subject and report back, if he has an answer that is!
I'm not an expert so i can't comment on the whole gas stuff.
I have to say I think wrap is more effective than ceramic coat with heat.
I had the downpipe on my turbo car ceramic coated and really wished i would have gone with the wrap. A friend with the same car had much cooler under hood temperatures with a wrap than i did with the ceramic coat.
I wouldn't mind wrapping my current exhaust, but im too lazy lol.
I wrapped my exhaust & haven't had any issues but I don't think wrap works very well. My pipes still get hot as hell & smoke like crazy when it rains. I've been debating on removing it but not sure ill like the look.
Great point swiftybkells! I had forgot all about that. Last summer me and a buddy got caught in the rain on the way home 1 day. We pulled in to get gas and under a shelter for a bit and his bike sat there and smoked like crazy. People were stopping and asking if he needed help! Still, it's an "owner's" decision. Do what you like best!
There's an Old School trick. After wrapping the pipes and letting the wrap cure, spray the wrap with a High Temp Paint containing Silicone. It acts as a water barrier.
