Default Exhaust question

I have a stock 88ci TC-B and bought new exhaust for it. What seems weird to me is that the exhaust pipes do not fit inside the exhaust ports where the exhaust gasket is.

They but right up against the opening.

Did I get sent the wrong pipes???

Well klf33,

I'm currently sitting in Kabul, Afghanistan so pics & part# will have to wait a while till I get back to the states... I see you have an 01 ST, do your pipes fit inside the exhaust ports???

With my SSW+ 124" heads the RB Racing 2-1 did fit inside the exhaust port and went right against the gaskets. Sadly that boat anchor is no longer in one piece hence my return to a new bone-stock 88ci.

I'll check my JP Cycles account and see if the exhaust I ordered is still listed...

Hey man. First of all be safe..
Yes they do fit but it would be a snug fit and tightening the bolts is what seals it it should be done also evenly so it won't leak

Will do klf33!

I was expecting the exhaust pipes to fit inside the port and squish the exhaust gasket creating a seal.

As it is now the pipes are up against the outside of the cylinder head and don't even come close to fitting inside where the gasket is.

And I hear this weird noise when its running like an exhaust leak... Even my wife was asking what that sound was.

Wish I had a better close-up of the pipes but I'm limited to what I have saved on my computer.

Just curious if J&P sent me the wrong year model.

That's a shame if they don't fit, those are great looking pipes.

Thanks Wide Open!

I'll buy another similar set from a different manufacturer.

If they bolt up then they'll fit, somehow. I like turning each bolt several but equal turns like klf33 said. You'll get a good, even crush on the gasket. Before you're 100% tightened give each pipe a wiggle. Torque to spec plus 5%. I find the new gaskets "settle" then need to be checked after 100 or so miles.
Thanks for your service!

What type of gaskets are you using?

You may need the thinner "performance" gasket as my dealer put it. The stock gasket from the dealer won't work well with aftermarket exhausts.
