Default 1985 fxst softail advice

hi everyone, I just picked up an all stock 1985 fxst with 8"risers and drag bars. Bike was impeccably maintained and has only 992 miles. Real gem. So I have a few questions. First I paid 5800 bike is in excellent condition how good a deal did I get what's it worth. Second I'm looking for a way to boost the horse power. Obviously I will keep all original parts and store them. Last can anyone recommend a good fairing or would a fairing take away from the look. Thanks in advance for any advice im new to this forum, Tommy

Sounds like a nice bike Tommy, you'll probably get more info in the evo section though. Is your bike a 4 speed with a kicker? From what I've read if you don't have a Keihin CV carb or an S&S you will want to change that. A andrews ev-27 cam is the popular choice for a cam for good mid performance with stock heads an stock valve springs. Here's a good guide to building a solid evo motor. You can click on all the stages in the right box: http://www.nightrider.com/biketech/hdstage1.htm

Default Thanks Lang

thanks for the advice Lang . This is my first time ever being on a forum or chat room still trying to navigate. Yes it's a four speed kicker closed air intake cover. Someone also recommended a stage one kit and changing the pipes.
Last year of electric and kick and I think the second year of evo

I'd say you possibly got a great deal. HD is like a fine wine usually gets better with age. depending on the condition, it could be a $10k bike. a stage 1^ kit, directed air intake, and a set of 2 into 1 pipes are good areas to start if you are looking for more power. a fairing is all about personal taste and what kind of riding you will be doing. do you just want clear or smoked lexan or maybe some fiberglass too? is function the main goal? lots of choices to consider. personally, i like the ones similar to the "batwing" on the street glide. there are aftermarket units in several sizes specific to the ST. find what fits you and enjoy the ride.

I believe " impeccably maintained" but have my doubts on 992 miles...those bikes are real hard on speedometers...my 84 is on it's third. As far as value, that bike only has increased value if you keep it close to 100% stock...do a bunch of mods on it, and you will have a hard time selling it for what you paid for it. Post some pics, sounds like a great find.

Thanks for all the advice. Yeah I'm pretty sure the mileage is right. Was a sad story the owner and his friend bought matching bikes from the dealer and his friend was killed (rip) on the other one shortly after. He also has eight other bikes all in great shape. More of a collector than rider. I plan on keeping it mainly stock and anything I change I will keep the original parts. Will post pics this weekend. Thanks again for all the advice

Really looking forward to seeing pics of it. Forget the fairing - they rarely look good on wide glides, fit some western bars and call it done. Id pull all the tins and fit aftermarket with a cheapy paint job.
