Hi guys about to have my 04 heritage 88 torn down and rebuilt. Going to a 98 with ported heads and s&s 585 easy start cams. Changing out the cam plate and ignition. My question. Have Vance and Hines long shots on it now and was told that they may not be the best performing pipes for this build. Been looking around and not sure what may the best replacement or keep the pipes have. Any input would be appreciated.
Thank you
the longshots are a good enough pipe, assuming you're running baffles.. though it's commonly known that a 2-1 exhaust will give you a few extra HP and torques.. but you shouldn't have issues with the longshots.
Thanks for your input guys. Not ready to swap out the pipes the build will cost enough! I'll see how it performs with the long shots and may swap them out next winter.
I'd recommend any of these 2-1 system for top Numbers,,,, D&D fatcats, V&H's new ProPipe, Bassina Newer Road Rage II's and TH'ers,
Any of the above 4 (Not in order of best one) will be a great improvement over any 2-2 system... more so in the lower 1/3 rpm range (2k to 4k RPM's) which is what we really want and need.
The longs will create a tq dip. A 2n1 provides more area under the curve and you would feel the diff with a 2n1. I had bss and cammed the bike. Later added a 2n1. Obvious diff and it has a nice deeper, throatier tone, especially at wot.
Choosing pipes comes down to what you want, for a street build a 2-1 will perform better at rpms under 4000-3500rpm, for a race bike with appropriate cams 2-2 pipes will builsd more power above 3500-4000 rpm.. However you are talking about gains of 5-10hp or torque which in not that much of a difference to get too crazy about.
After all none of use would drag race any of our air cooled harleys unless you're putting in a SE120R or JIMS oe similar engine..
You want a matched package, the 585 cams don't come on until around 3200 rpm so getting a 2-1 is kind of a band aid fix to boost the lower rpm power were that cam wasn't made to run in.. If you put around at 2000rpm you should pick a different cam and a 2-1 pipe.. If you're ok with cruising at 2800rpm plus then the 585 will work great.
Have looked into those Bassani's and am convinced. They look and sound great. From everything I have read they are great performers as well.
Yep we are really happy with these pipes. Nice DEEP rumble and not to loud, you do get noticed but not the "WTH" kinda looks. And when you get on the throttle you can definitely feel the difference over the stock pipes. Now all we need to do is install a better air cleaner and a tuner, looking at the Power Commander V.
