Default Need help - Rear wheel removal

Hey guys,

I have my service manual on order for my 10' Fat Boy, but I NEED to change the rear tire, like yesterday. I have the tire hear waiting, but don't have time to wait for the service manual to arrive.

Could you guys possibly give me a step by step instruction on how to remove the rear wheel. I would take it to Harley, but these crazy stealers want about $200 to change front and rear. They're NUTS! Plus, I hate the thought of someone else doing work on my bike. I like to do everything myself. I've taken off the rear wheel on my 06 street bob many times, but it looks a bit different with this Softail.

Can someone please take the time to help a brotha out here?

Thanks,
Adrian

You'll probly have to take off the lower belt guard to move the tire forward enough to get the belt off , I do any way, but mines Old .

Getting the wheel and tire back on is what gives me trouble! That friggin brake caliper has a mind of it's own! Just when you're about to throw a wrench it will fall into place.

basically:

-remove pipes so you can pull out the axle shaft (if your pipes are that long)
-remove axle nut clip
-loosen axle nut
-loosen left side (axle nut side) axle adjuster and thread all the way in so you can slack the belt, and slide axle forward. I typically only do the left side, it's easier to get belt tension and alignment correct later on assembly if you leave the right side adjuster alone.
- pull belt off pulley
-note which spacers are where
-support tire from bottom by either lowering bike down a bit until tire contacts ground and presses up on axle until you can free spin the axle by hand, or jam your foot under there and lift up with your foot, same effect, get tension off the axle bolt, and rip the axle out the right side.
-"support brake caliper", or just let it hang like most people do...

not too involved, puttin it back together requires a bit more patience.

Yes! Thanks Mike. That's exactly what I'm looking for. It should be the same process with my bike even though its different, right?

Besides the brake, the biggest issue you'll have is getting the bike high enough to clear the fender. 65 ft lbs MAX when you tighten the axle nut.
